Tale of Two Coaches
November 21st, 2009 | by PatsChowder |Tale of Two Coaches
This weekend, we are fortunate enough to witness a meeting of two complete opposites of the exact same nature. That’s right, we’re going to get to watch New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick stare across the sidelines at the leader of the New York Jets, Rex Ryan. I think this illustration from NEPatriotsDraft.com speaks volumes.

Let’s get this out of the way right up front: Bill Belichick is a robot. He does not wear his emotions on his sleeve and crying at all, let alone in front of people, is totally out of the question. Belichick barely talks to reporters even when he’s contractually obligated to show up at press conferences. Seriously, after last week’s devastating loss to the Indianapolis Colts, he shrugged it off confident in his call. He felt like he made the right call to put the ball in the hands of his best player, Tom Brady, and he was sticking to it. And you know what, I love him for that. That’s the mindset I want in a coach. Rex Ryan would have produced enough tears to melt with wicked witch of the west with that sort of pressure.
However, while they may have different motivational styles may the two coaches do share quite a few characteristics. They are both gamers. They are both football lifers. They come from a lineage of great football minds with Bill’s father Steve and Rex’s father Buddy. We often hear about players that were brought up in football homes. Sons who learn the game from their fathers hanging around the locker rooms and picking up the skills they use later in life. The same can be said for coaches. Except instead of learning the physical tools, Belichick and Ryan were busy developing an eye for talent and learning the strategies inside the game.
I’m just glad my coach isn’t the crier.
