Larry Johnson Rumors Abound

ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter has reported that the New England Patriots may be one of the teams interested in signing the former Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the video to post here; however, I do have the video evidence via link. In a little over an hour, Johnson we will know if Johnson did, in fact, clear waivers and becomes a free agent for the Pats taking.

I know the Madden gamer of fantasy football player in all of us would love to see the Patriots go out of their way to grab the potential of another washed up running back (see: Fred Taylor). However, I want absolutely no part of it. The guy has been a malcontent from the beginning of his NFL career and hits that magic number 30 next week. Literally.
Oh, and let’s not forget that thing that we like to call production. This year, Larry Johnson has 358 rushing yards… through 7 games. That amounts to a whopping 2.7 yards per carry. Top on the zero touchdowns on the season and we have a bonafide play-maker, right? I know, you can say all the talent around him has gone away. No more devestating O-Line. No more Tony Gonzalez. Whatever. The guy isn’t that good anymore.
I’m not saying he’s a chump. The guy had two crazy seasons in 2005-2006, but he amassed 752 carries. The Chiefs rode him as hard as they could and they got great production out of him, but his future is grim. His 8 touchdowns in the last two seasons pale in comparison to the 37 the two years prior.
To the Patriots fan that wants to go after LJ, I ask you this… what’s wrong with Laurence Maroney? What’s wrong with Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis? Isn’t Sammy Morris effective when he’s healthy? Would we really get any better? Really?
I’ll be Twittering about Larry Johnson all day. Come and join me.
