Fantasy Pick of the Week

There is a lot of love for Tom Brady right now. He’s topping a lot of the projections lists at quarterback for this week, but I’ve already used him once and I’m feeling a little frisky this time around. I’m rolling the dice, putting my neck on the line, and throwing out a name that might not be expected this week. This week’s fantasy pick of the week is…

Ben Watson
Ok. So, it’s not as far out as Sam Aiken, but these days, anyone aside from Brady, Randy Moss, and Wes Welker is a bit of a risk. I also just posted a blog on the 10 Concerns I have regarding the Patriots. In that post, I highlighted the lack of production from the tight end position. However, this might be a week to roll the dice. Especially if you are (read: formerly) a Chris Cooley or Owen Daniels owner.
Watson is prone to breakout weeks. He’ll do nothing for months and then show up huge with two touchdowns randomly and he hasn’t really broken out since week one’s 6 reception 77 yard, two touchdown explosion. However, what makes this a risky proposition is the fact that Watson has historically struggled against Miami. We’re talking epic struggles – 7 receptions for 60 yards and no touchdowns in his last FOUR games.
While fantasy owners don’t want to see those numbers, they, like myself, can focus on the positive which is that this is a new Miami defense that has been unable to stop tight ends all year long. The main tight end on opposing offenses this year has racked up and average of 6 receptions, 100 yards, and they’ve produced 3 touchdowns. Granted, Miami has played some elite tight ends: Dallas Clark, Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, and Jeremy Shockey. But last week, Dustin Keller gave hope to all of lesser fantasy tight ends after ripping off 76 yards and a score on 8 receptions.
Prediction: Watson goes for 4-6 receptions, 50-75 yards, and a score. He’s definitely someone worth owning if your tight end is injured or on bye this week.
