Just Say No

No. No-no-no-no-no. What are we saying no to, exactly? We’re saying it to TO. Yes that TO. The one in Buffalo who looks like he’s 55 and not 35. The one who continually ruins clubhouses. The one who’s on an all for me agenda. Yeah, that one. We’re saying no. Or at least we better be.
No.
One thousand times no.

It seems more likely that we will see a trade or two take place during the NFL trade deadline this year than in year’s past; and, yes, it does seem like Buffalo is shopping Owens as they should be. But these rumors of TO to New England had better be false. I’ve read plenty of articles in support of the move, or are at least entertaining the thought like MaPatsFan at Pats Pulpit. I’m sorry, I just don’t see it.
For those claiming that the Joey Galloway experiment is a colossal failure (and it is), why should we immediately turn to another old wide receiver? Why wouldn’t we find someone who can fit the mold of the receivers we have seen play successful roles with New England. Why don’t we look for a David Givens or Jabar Gaffney type guy? They are out there, just sitting, waiting for a phone call.
What about D.J. Hackett? Last time we heard about him he was working out for the Colts after Anthony Gonzalez was hurt. We know he’s towards the top of quite a few “emergency wide receiver lists” across the NFL. Tampa Bay has been working out former Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones. Sure he comes with some off the field baggage, but he’s a model citizen compared to the disaster in Buffalo. Justin McCareins and Reggie Williams also sit without a team. I will concede that none of these players are going to the Hall of Fame. And, when it’s all said and done, Terrell Owens probably will be. However, when you are trying to find a fit in the middle of the season, it seems like these free agents would make better options.
Not to mention the cost vs. production factor. What does D.J. Hackett cost you? Money, and probably not that much. That’s all. TO on the other hand, well, not just will he cost you money, but he’s going to cost the Patriots a player or more likely a draft pick.
Let the Bears, or Vikings, or some other team take the risk. I’m hoping these rumors are merely the culmination of a simple formula. Madden gamers + free speech online = ridiculous trade rumors.
One thousand times no.
