Laurence Maroney Needs to Step Up

WEEI’s It Is What It Is blog has posted a few audio clips from their discussion with Patriots running back Laurence Maroney. After the losses of Fred Taylor and Matt Light, Maroney touches on a few different topics including how the Pats run game needs to step up as a unit.

Laurence, let me explain a few things. YOU need to be the one to step up. Fred Taylor was a nice addition, but he’s injury prone and at the tail end of his career. Sammy Morris has been a fine complimentary back, but despite my ridiculous man crush for him, he can only do so much. We know what Kevin Faulk and BJGE can do. They’re nice, but they’re not feature backs.
YOU sir… you are a feature back. You ran your mouth this offseason talking about how you were going to grab the reigns to this backfield. You’re the one who had the star-studded college career. You’re the one who came into the league looking like a future Pro Bowler. If the running game in New England is going to improve you’re going to have to be the one to do it.
Yes, the unit can still be effective without you. Morris can handle the workload while giving you 5-10 carries a game. Faulk can handle third downs as usual and BJGE can even come in and snake a few goal line carries, but let’s face facts. If someone is going to step up, grab the unit by the horns, and give the offense a truly intimidating rushing attack it’s going to be you.
Less talk. More walk. Let’s see it on Sunday.
