The NFL’s Big 3: Brady, Brees, and Manning
July 8th, 2009 | by PatsChowder |
So, it was just after my lunch break this afternoon that a buddy of mine and I started arguing about fantasy football. We’re both avid players and have been for a while. Are we geeks, I suppose that all depends on if you’re a fantasy geek too. Anyway, we got into this discussion about the best investment in a salary based league. Before you non-fantasy players click away the general premise boils down to this:
Who’s the best quarterback for 2009: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, or Drew Brees?
For the fantasy geeks like me, we were trying to level the playing field saying that this was a league where there were no trades allowed and all three quarterbacks were priced at the exact same amount. With these qualifications it allowed us to just pick outright who would be the best QB over the course of the full 16-game regular season.
My argument for Brady was pretty standard. He’s a stud. His last full season he set the touchdown record and if nothing else the offense is better with the additions of Fred Taylor, Joey Galloway, and the tight end faction. My buddy, who’s a Colts fan, argued for Drew Brees since he believes New Orleans will do the exact same thing they did last season… throw, throw, and throw again. Meanwhile, Brady is coming off of a serious injury.
So I pose the question to you… who’s the best QB for 2009?

I agree with your buddy on drew brees being the best pick. I am a long time patriot fan but I think Brady won’t be showing off full potential all season and use short passes and runs more than he did in 07, not because he can’t but because he will save the long bombs for playoffs and special games. I really see our offense very balanced and powerful this season, but it won’t be all Brady this time.

I don’t totally disagree. I mean, let’s face it. All three of these guys are studs and Brady is coming off a bit of an injury. My issue with Brees is that I am not sure that he can duplicate what he did last season. I think for the price tag I would be paying, I would roll the dice on the upside of Brady and risk his injury potential.
