Today the Patriots officially welcomed Patrick Chung, their first selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, to the organization in front of a hoard of reporters at a press conference held at Gillette Stadium. Chung held up a #1 jersey with pride alongside Patriots owner Robert Kraft and President Jonathan Kraft this morning around 11:00am. Both the jersey and the hat that Chung displayed were throwbacks in honor of the Patriots 50th anniversary.

THe Patriots selected the safety out of Oregon with the second pick in the second round (#34 overall) and made him the second safety taken off the board (Louis Delmas of Western Michigan was the first and went to Detroit one pick ahead of Chung).

Chung will be expected to come in and bring pressure against opposing running games immediately. It looks as if Chung will take over at strong safety while Brandon Meriweather will hold down the free safety spot forming a very strong, fast, and young centerfield tandem for some time to come. Whether or not the Patriots put this plan in motion out of the gates is still up for debate.
