Patriots Bolster Defensive Depth: Re-Sign Woods, Smith
April 22nd, 2009 | by PatsChowder |Who says the NFL draft is the only place to get players. While the entire NFL has turned its attention to the draft this weekend, the Patriots are still hard at work stabilizing the defense with some familiar faces. In the last 24 hours, New England has reached agreements with both LB Pierre Woods and DL Kenny Smith.
Pierre Woods has played in 36 games for New England over his four year career in which he has totaled 69 tackles, 1.0 sacks, and a pass deflection in part time duty. The 27-year-old out of Michigan won’t be a starter, but he could see a significant boost in playing time if the Patriots are unable to strengthen the linebacking unit in the draft this weekend.
The 31-year-old Smith is a six year veteran who spent 2001-2003 with New Orleans Saints and has been a journeyman ever since. He’s spent the last two seasons in New England during training camp, but was never able to make the cut.
